Mulch refers to the layer of a material that is applied to the surface of the soil to conserve moisture and improve the fertility of the soil. It is also often applied to prevent the growth of weed in the soil to increase its visual appeal. Mulch can be applied to the bare soil or around existing plants. There are organic mulches which include compost and manure. Inorganic mulches such as plastic and rubber also exist.
